Currently, we are looking for a Packaging Engineer to join the ArcBest® team. The Packaging Engineer works as part of a collaborative team and in consultation with internal and external customers to create functional, practical, innovative, and cost effective transport packaging designs for a board range of products. This position also observes, measures, and understands the challenges of the LTL distribution environment and effectively communicates to bring about positive change.


Your contribution may include:

  • Design primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging for National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) compliance, system compatibility, efficiency, cost optimization, performance testing and sustainability goals of ABF and our customers.
  • Research claim information, account histories, product fragilities, and packaging and handling methods to create documentation that assists Claims Analysts in determining the root cause to damage and compliance with minimum packaging requirements.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Sales, Safety, Claims Analysts, and customers as needed to develop corrective action plans to address packaging and cargo claims issues.
  • Utilize public speaking and communication skills in person and during video conferences with customers.
  • Travel to ABF Service Centers and customers’ manufacturing locations to assist in packaging/material handling development.
  • Make packaging recommendations utilizing CAD models, animations, finite element analysis, charts, written documentation and presentations.
  • Understand NMFC LTL packaging requirements, ASTM and ISTA test procedures, and the LTL transportation environment.
  • Use structured problem solving methods to determine route cause of damage claims.
  • Develop, promote and implement both short and long term solutions.
  • Monitor and identify high claims cost accounts and determine ways of minimizing damage and maximizing handling efficiency while remaining sensitive to cost implications.
  • Direct, advise, and instruct terminal personnel and shippers on the best methods of packaging and material handling.
  • Maintain a positive attitude in a highly intense environment.
  • Protect the security of information on confidential projects.
  • Other duties and projects, as assigned.

As a Packaging Engineer, you will be a member of the  Packaging Engineering and Material Handling department within the ABF Freight Cargo Claims team Your hours will be Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, with irregular hours that may occur depending on workload.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree Packaging Science/Engineering or related field, required.
  • Master's Degree Packaging Science/Engineering or related field, preferred.

Experience

  • Less than 1 year transport package design, manufacturing and/or testing.

Computer Skills

  • Microsoft Office proficient upon hire, required.
  • Solid Modeling Experience (SolidWorks) within 30 days, required.
  • SolidWorks Animation within 90 days, required.
  • Finite Element Analysis within 180 days, required.
  • Computer programming (Python, C+, or similar) upon hire, preferred.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to work effectively within in a team setting as well as independently to accomplish department goals.
  • Must be detail oriented and thrive in a fast paced, multi-tasking, customer service minded environment.
